AIMS FELLOWSHIP INFORMATION

One of the goals of the Centre has been to improve the standard of training of young orthopaedic surgeons in the areas of Knee Surgery, Sports Surgery and Orthopaedics in general. Consequently, a Fellowship Training program was established by Dr Mervyn Cross and Dr Leo Pinczewski in 1983. Since that time the program has gained an impressive national and international reputation for the quality of its training and has trained over 40 young surgeons from around the world.

Clinical and Research Fellowships of 6 or 12 month duration are available in Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, Joint Diseases and Joint Arthroplasty.

The positions are attractive to orthopaedic surgeons wishing to gain further experience in an area of orthopaedic sub-specialisation, particularly in the sports medicine environment. Extensive involvement in clinical research is assured because of the concentrated case load in these areas by orthopaedic surgery and the availability of computerised research facilities.
The Fellows are attached to respective orthopaedic surgeons during their term and participate in the regular consultation and surgical programme including patient examination, interrogation and follow-up, and surgical assistance where accredited. The opportunities exist for ongoing involvement in the presentation and the compilation and presentation of scientific papers.
Overseas orthopaedic surgeons are approved for entry to the Fellowship under strict criteria that they have obtained an Australian Occupational Trainee Visa and that they leave at the end of the appointment.

Written applications are received on an ongoing basis and notification to successful applicants is generally determined approximately twelve months in advance of placement.
AIMS Research is a non profit making Australian Government approved Research Institute. These Fellowships are offered through the North Sydney Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre. The Centre is one of the major private orthopaedic and sports medicine practices in Australia and is located on the lower north shore of Sydney.

Applications, including detailed curriculum vitae and the names of three referees with whom the applicant has worked, must be made out directly to the surgeon of choice and be received by 1 January or 1 July for approval of the following 12 months. The following are the surgeons who are part of fellowship program and their specialisations:
