Anatomy of the Knee

The knee is one of the largest and most complex joints in the body. It is more than just a simple hinge joint in a sense that it carry much of the pressure and force of bending such as climbing stairs, standing from a sitting position, and lifting.

Knees are comprised of the following elements to carry out their functions:

  • Bones
  • Articular cartilage
  • Menisci
  • Ligaments
  • Muscles

How Your Knee Works

A healthy knee rotates slightly and bends with little to no effort. The joint absorbs the pressure which enables you to move smoothly allowing you to walk, sit, squat, and turn without pain.

The knee is one of the most commonly injured joint in the body. Common knee injuries include the ff:

  • Fractures
  • Dislocation
  • Meniscal Tears
  • Bursitis
  • Tendositis
  • Collateral ligament injuries
  • Posterior cruciate ligament injuries
  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries
